Obituary for Mary Dlubac

Mary Dlubac
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, MARY ELIZABETH (DUNAY) DLUBAC of Daytona Beach, FL, formerly of Stafford Springs and Rockville, CT, on 19 January 2017, a mere 36 days shy of her 100th birthday. As were her wishes, she died at home surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born on 24 February 1917 in Elkins, WV, the eldest child of John Dunay and Elizabeth (Omasta) Dunay. She was a first-generation American; her parents were of Slovak descent, who emigrated from Hungary before WWI, and were married here. When Mary was 2 years old, her family bought and moved to a farm in Stafford Springs, CT, where she and her siblings were raised. The farm was located on a hill at the end of a road that bears the family name (Dunay Road). Mary, the eldest of 10 children, was 12 years old when her Father died, and her Mother did not remarry. In order to support the family and keep her siblings together, Mary left school (7thgrade) to work full-time in the Hydeville woolen factory where her Father had been employed. She later was in service as a house maid in West Hartford, CT and Brooklyn, NY. After she was married and while raising her children, she ran a family-owned store and stand at Lake Chaffee in Ashford, CT and the kitchen at the family-owned Market Square Café in Rockville, CT. Mary was married to Joseph (Joe) Andrew Dlubac on 3 September 1938 at St. Edward’s Church in Stafford Springs, CT. In addition to raising 8 children of their own, they also raised 5 foster children. Mary and Joe lived in Rockville, CT until 1970, before moving with their 3 youngest children to Daytona Beach, Fl. Mary and Joe spent many wonderful years together, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary before he passed away in 2008. The church was an important part of Mary’s life. She was a parishioner and communicant at the Catholic Mission Church in Staffordville, CT, St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Stafford Springs, CT, St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rockville, CT and the Basilica of St Paul in Daytona Beach, FL. In Rockville,Mary was a volunteer at St. Joseph’s School cafeteria, a member of the Women’s Sodality, and a CCD teacher. While in Daytona Beach and a member of the Basilica of St. Paul, she served as a Eucharistic Minister, a church lector, a minister to the sick, one of the founding members of the Pilgrim Virgin Rosary Group, assisted her husband Joe with Hospital and Prison Ministries, and ministered to the Homebound. She also volunteered at numerous church fairs and fundraisers.

The love of Mary’s life was her family; they were her “hobby” and her passion. She was especially fond and proud of her growing number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love was shared with family and friends, and even those she did not know, through her affectionately-prepared meals. No one left her home hungry. The table was as bountiful in food as her heart was full of love. Mary is pre-deceased by her Father and Mother, John and Elizabeth (Omasta) Dunay of Stafford Springs,CT; her husband, Joseph Andrew Dlubac of Daytona Beach, FL; a son, Edward Steven Dlubac (in 1944at 2 years old); a daughter, Helen Marie (Dlubac) Todd of Murfreesboro, TN; sisters Anna(Dunay) Turner and Sophia (Dunay) Swift of Stafford Springs, CT; a sister Elizabeth (Dunay)Pepin of Manchester, CT; and brothers Joseph, John, and Michael Dunay of Stafford Springs, CT. Mary is survived by her sons (and their spouses) Joseph John (Barbara) Dlubac of Waterford, CT/New Smyrna Beach, FL, William Edward (Beverly) Dlubac of Daytona Beach, FL and James Joseph (Donna) Dlubac of Gaithersburg, MD; her daughters (and their spouses) Teresa Ann Tekin (Jack) Dowd of Derry, NH, CarolJean (Dennis) Doherty of Plymouth, MA and Elizabeth Agnes(Larry) Covington of Daytona Beach,FL; her sisters Margaret Woytik of Jamestown, RI, Helena (Roger) Cartier of Pinellas Park, FL and Kathryn (Frank) Malack of Willington, CT; and sisters-in-law Della Dunay of Stafford Springs,CT, Anna Lucas of Anaheim, CA, and Helen Pardus of New Smyrna Beach, FL. Finally, she is also survived by her twenty-three (23) grandchildren, thirty-five (35) great-grandchildren, three (3) great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank VITAS Healthcare and Mom’s caregivers for their service and devotion. Family will receive friends from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, 27 January 2017, at Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St, Rockville, CT. A funeral mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, 28 January 2017 at 11 am in St. Joseph’s Church, 33 West St, Rockville, CT; meet at the church. Interment will be at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Rockville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church, 33 West St, Rockville, CT 06066.
