Herbert Raymond Tschummi, 92, died peacefully on February 23, 2017 at the Bickford Health Care Center. He was born on July 5, 1924 in East Windsor to Raymond E and Anna (Herbert) Tschummi. He remained in East Windsor his entire life except for his military service in World War II. He enlisted in the US Army at age 19 where he served the Yankee Division 104th Infantry. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and continued his service throughout Europe where his unit liberated several Nazi work camps. He was battlefield promoted to rank of Platoon Sergeant and awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. In 1950, he graduated from UConn where he was backup goalie on the 1948 National Soccer team and starting goalie in 1949. He had a successful career in industrial sales traveling extensively with Pratt & Whitney and eventually retired as Regional Sales Manager with AMF-Cuno in 1989. He was an active follower and participant of sports teams, supporter of UConn athletics, East Windsor Politics serving as 3rd Selectman and a member of the police commission. Herb was a lifetime member of the Ale & Quail Sports Club, the German Club and American Legion. In Retirement, he was fortunate to be able to travel frequently, spending winters in Florida, golfing in Ireland and Scotland and participating in the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in Normandy. Herb was a devoted Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and friend to many. He is survived by eight children, one son and seven daughters; John D. Tschummi (Rosita) Somers, Ellen Burris Suffield, Margot Moffet (Jordan) Madison, Claudia Craighill (Daniel) Vernon, Christine Shanney (Chris) Woodstock, VT, Nancy Cilyo (Ron) East Windsor, Lisa Benitez (Angel) Windsor Locks, Tracey Roy (Dean) Tolland; one grandson, seven granddaughters and six great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Jean (Trombley) Tschummi in 1990. Relatives and friends may join the family on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 4-7 at Bassinger & Dowd Funeral Home, 37 Gardner St, East Windsor. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Catherine Church (Please meet at Church). Burial will follow at St. Catherine Cemetery.
