Obituary for Myrtle Benjamin (Mann)

Myrtle Benjamin ,75, of Ellington, beloved wife of Dr. Arnold Benjamin, passed away at St Francis Hospital on Friday, September 29th 2017. Myrtle was born in Rome, Georgia on November 17th, 1941, her parents were Hansome and Jessie Mann who had five children. Myrtle is survived by and will be greatly missed by her husband Dr. Arnold Benjamin and children Arnold David, Aaron, Myrna and grandson Timothy Scott. Myrtle graduated from Calhoun high school in Calhoun, GA. Followed by the B.S degree from Tuskegee University, and then the Masters degree from Howard University. Later, she joined the faculty at Tuskegee University in the Department of Home Economics and Consumer Science. After her marriage to Dr. Arnold Benjamin she taught in the Connecticut Public School System. Upon the arrival of the children, she resigned from teaching and assumed the role of a full time mother. As the children matured she returned to teaching in the Connecticut Public School System. She loved teaching and inspiring her students to be their best. Myrtle joined the Wesleyan Church in 1975 and was a member of the missions committee, the nursery school and the social committee. She was active in the community and was involved with the Ellington Senior Center, Ellington Grange, Auxiliary member of the Gideons International and a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta. Myrtle also leaves behind her siblings and their families are Juanita Sanks of Niceville, FL. Deborah Graves of Mt Vernon, NY and Edward Mann of Harrisburg, PA. The family of Jesse Mann (deceased). Brothers in law and family, Ernest Benjamin of Antigua. George Benjamin of England. Reginal Benjamin of New York and Patrick Reynolds of Antigua. Cousins from Antigua Phyllis, Iris Ann, Janice, and Vernon Jr. Myrtle’s family wishes to express great appreciation to her friends and family both near and far for their love and care. Thank you to the entire medical staff at the Rockville General Hospital, the Vernon Davita Dialysis Center, Kimberly Hall Rehabilitation, St Francis Hospital, and also the Ellington Ambulance, Ellington Senior transportation and Burke-Fortin Funeral Home. and a special thanks to her health aide and close friend Susan for all that she has done. Calling hours are Sunday, October 8th between 2 –5pm at Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St, Rockville, CT. 06066. A Funeral service will be held on Monday October 9th 2017, 11am at the Ellington Wesleyan Church at 276 Crystal Lake Road, Ellington, CT. 06029. Burial will follow at Ellington Center Cemetery.
