Obituary for Donald W. Johnston

Donald W.  Johnston

Donald W. Johnston, 72, of Vernon, passed away peacefully after a brief
illness, Friday, July 29, 2016 at home with his wife, Joyce of 51 years
by his side. He was loved so much by his family & friends. “And in the
end, it is not the years in your life that count but the life in your
years.” Don had many wonderful years.
Don was raised in Ellington the son of George & Shirley (Stevenson)
Johnston. He served in the US Air Force, graduated from Ellington High
School, Porter School of Drafting & Design and Central CT State Univ. He
spent his career in the Power Systems Industry.
He was active throughout his life including being an avid fly fisherman,
UCONN & Yankees fan, Little League Coach, bird watcher & loved Vintage
Cars and Rallying with his Triumph Spitfire. Don & Joyce spent many
happy times with their dear friends, Doris & Jim, traveling to Alaska &
Europe, as well as many other adventures. He loved music and was a
member of the EHS Marching Band and UCONN Concert band.
He was predeceased by his parents, George & Shirley Johnston;
sister-in-law, Sharon Bloniarz & brothers-in-law, Joseph Zambo & John
Lee; and nephew, Jack (John) Lee.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Johnston; two sons & daughter-in-law,
Todd & Bridget Johnston and Scott Johnston of Vernon; sister and
brother-in-law, Wendy & Don MacDougal of Vernon; sisters-in-law, Eleanor
Zambo of Ashford & Betty Lee of Tolland; brother-in-law, Gene Bloniarz
of Tolland; his aunt, Pat Stevenson of FL; as well as many other dear
friends, nieces, nephews and relatives.
Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 4-7 PM on
Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect
St., Rockville, CT. 06066. A Funeral Home Service will be held at 10 AM
on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home. Burial
will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Vernon. Memorial donations may be
