Obituary for Charlotte R. Coe PhD

Charlotte R. Coe, R.N., Ed., D.,died Monday, July 23, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital . She was born in Bridgeport, CT on November 14, 1925, the daughter of the late Frederick and Elizabeth Coe. She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary E. Coe, Ruth Lisk and is survived by a niece, Martha Lisk, of Garden City, KS and formerly of Rockville, CT. Dr. Coe graduated from Grace-New Haven School of Nursing, New Haven, CT in 1946 and practiced nursing in New Haven, Bridgeport and New York City. In 1953, after earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education at Teacher s College, Columbia University, she taught at Grace-New Haven School of Nursing for five years. She earned a Master of Arts from Teachers College, Columbia University and moved to Laramie, Wyoming in 1958 to begin her commitment to a career in baccalaureate nursing education at the University of Wyoming. During 1958-1966, while a faculty member of the College of Nursing at the University of Wyoming, Dr. Coe earned a Doctor of Education from the University of Wyoming. After serving on the faculty of the Schools of Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Connecticut, Dr. Coe moved to Providence, R.I. to establish the B.S. in Nursing program at Rhode Island College and in 1975 returned to CT as Professor of Nursing to teach at Saint Joseph College, West Hartford. She served as Chairperson of the Division of Nursing 1980-82 and continued on the faculty until retirement in June, 1987 when she moved to Loveland, CO. She returned to CT in 1993. Dr. Coe was a member of the American Nurses’ Assn., the National League for Nursing; a lifetime member of the Grace-New Haven Alumni Association and the University of Wyoming Alumnae Assn. She served on the Board of Directors of St. Mary Home, West Hartford,CT , The visiting Nurse and Home Care Assn. of East Hartford, CT and many other volunteer activities in CT and CO. In Lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Joseph Residence, 1365 Enfield St, Enfield, CT 06082. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, July 30,2018 at 10:00 am at St. Bernard Church, 25 St. Bernard Terrace, Rockville, CT. Burial will be private.
