Obituary for Lawrence J. Cyr

Print
Lawrence J. Cyr, 91, of South Windsor passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. He was born in Canada on June 25, 1927, one of 5 children born to George and Elizabeth (Martin) Cyr and was raised in Caribou, ME.
He served in the US Air Force during WWII and the Korean War. He retired from United Parcel Service in 1992 after 31 years where he worked as a truck mechanic by trade but was able to repair just about anything. He refinished a 16 room Victorian house in Ellington where he and his wife Priscilla made their home and raised their family. They retired to Sebastian FL where they spent 24 wonderful years enjoying the Florida weather away from the cold northern weather. He was also an unwavering example of courage, faith and love. While in Florida, Lawrence was a member of the American Legion and kept busy tinkering around the house, volunteering at the Legion and helping his wife with craft projects. Along with spending time with his family, he could always find something that was in need of repair or improvement and always found a way to not only fix it, but also make it work better. If Larry could not fix it, it probably was not worth fixing anyway. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and in their younger years, they would dance the night away to the sounds of Big Band music from the 1940's. The song "In the Mood" by Glenn Miller was one of his favorites. Lawrence is survived by his daughters, Gwendolyn (Scott) Matlock of Denver NC, Dr. Laurie Cyr-Martel, of Auburn ME, Kathy Cyr, of Tolland CT and son Alan (Kathie) Cyr of Vernon CT. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Elizabeth (Will) Arlint of Auburn, ME, Emily, Jessica and Daniel Cyr of Vernon, CT, and great grandson Collin Arlint of Auburn ME. He is survived by his sister Lorretta Williams of Caribou ME, along with many nieces and nephews.
Lawrence was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Priscilla M. Cyr, in June of 2018. He was also predeceased by his brother Claude Cyr, his sisters Anita Kidney and Georgette Fitzherbert and his grandson baby Ryan.
The family would like to thank the staff at Vernon Manor and all of the wonderful caregivers who took care of Lawrence. A special thank you to Rebecca Martin. Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in his memory and to celebrate Lawrence at 10:00 a.m., on Monday November 19, 2018 at St. Bernard Church, 25 St. Bernard Terrace, Rockville, CT. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery, Vernon, CT. There are no calling hours; the family thanks you in advance for keeping Lawrence in your thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Association, Connecticut Chapter, 200 Executive Blvd S #4b, Southington, CT 06489 or alz.org/get-involved-now/donate.
