Barbara L. Matyia, 82, of South Windsor, formerly of Andover, CT and Stuart, FL, beloved wife of the late Albie C. Matyia passed away Monday, January 21, 2019. She was born October 26, 1936 in Rockville, the daughter of the late John and Louise (Palozej) Hughes. In 1953 her beloved Albie called her from where he was stationed in San Diego and said “When are you coming out here?” This spunky young woman at the age of 16 made her way to California where they married. They enjoyed life together for 63 years until he passed in May of 2017. In her own words “There was never anyone else for either of us.” They enjoyed 31 years of retirement snowbirding to Florida, traveling cross country and touring Ireland. Her family was her life and her greatest joys were her five children and grandchildren who consider themselves truly blessed to have had such wonderful parents. She took much pride working for Gerber Garment Technologies, starting as a clerk typist and working her way up to systems coordinator. She is survived by her four daughters and their spouses, Joann and Brian Bolles of Tolland, Jacki and Doug Friedrich of Union, Terry and Bryan Evans of Vernon, and Patti and Ken Nota of Bradenton, FL; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Besides her husband she was predeceased by her loving son, Paul Matyia and her sister, Ann Suchecki. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 9 to 10 AM on Monday, January 28, 2019 at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St., Rockville, CT 06066. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, 33 West St., Rockville, CT 06066. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Rockville. It was a privilege to be Barbara's physician for 45 years or more before I retired 4 years ago. I last greeted Barbara and Albie in a Vernon Burger King 2 years ago and we enjoyed a long reminiscence. My wife Jean and I wish to express our heartfelt condolences. Such a genial person will be sorely missed.
