David E. Whitehead 91, of Bolton, beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Jaschinsky) Whitehead, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2019. He was born on December 9, 1927 in Colorado Springs, CO, the son of the late Earl and Grace (Girardet) Whitehead. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended University of Washington graduating with a BS in Biology. He then went on to study medicine at Northwestern University School of Medicine and completed a residency in Anesthesia at Hartford Hospital. He was one of the founding members of Hartford Anesthesia Associates and participated in the residency training program for many years.

In addition to a fulfilling career, David practiced Karate for many years in the Hartford Karate Club, obtaining Black Belt status. He was an avid reader and studied religion and philosophy at his leisure. Some of his best times were spent hiking his land in Vermont and kayaking with his son William and grandson.

To David, Deborah, and Bill,
Please know that having just returned from a trip today, I share your grief on learning of the passing of your dad and my friend Dave. Our friendship was long and real, going back to our medical school days and continuing for years thereafter. It's difficult for me to describe the friendship we had as both of us were different in so many ways. Yet we always knew and understood that we had each other's back at all times and in all places in a relationship that was unique, important, and nurtured as classmates, fraternity brothers, friends, colleagues and partners. That said, I regret not having reached out more to him in recent years, believing as i did that I had ample time to do so. Instead I now feel the loss of not being in his presence before his passing to expound on the many thoughts we managed to conjure up in the past. Your dad's commitment to and insistence on privacy, however, was known to all, and one that I and others respected. May he now rest in peace. Pondering the past and reminiscing about the myriad moments we shared, I can only think of the words of Aristotle, who wrote : "Even when the loss of his presence gives us pain, still a certain pleasure arises in our mourning and lamentation, for pain is felt at the loss of the beloved, but pleasure is also experienced in remembering him and, as it were, seeing him as he lived and moved."
Your dad was a special guy, a real man, and a true professional, respected, loved, and admired by all.

We appreciate your eloquent tribute. It is a profound loss despite his elderly status. He did not go well after the loss of Mom 5 months ago. Thank you for the wonderful words Deborah

For the 8 years I worked in the O.R. at Hartford Hospital (back in the 60's, 70's) many times were spent working in the same room with Dr. Whitehead. It was a pleasure to work alongside of him, a gentle man was he. May the loving memories he has left you, sustain you always. Rest in the eternal peace of Christ Dr. Whitehead.
