I just wrote a book on JD's former ship, the Coast Guard Cutter Jarvis, of which he provided some input and stories. "All Present and Accounted For" was the true story of the near sinking of the ship Jarvis in November of 1972. Some of JD's comments for the book: Quartermaster striker Dave Martin, a lifetime mariner in his career after the Coast Guard, and Radarman Third Class John Moran, both remember the helo starting to skid off the deck after the tie-downs were released before it shot into the air...… Observing their arrival, Petty Officer John Moran, while standing with Petty Officer Robert Loftin, attempted humor in the situation and quipped: “Portsmouth Naval Prison won’t be so bad. They have color TV and sliding weekends.”...…….. It was a very busy night- excellent crew. If it had been a different crew, you would have had deaths. John Moran...……… Anyone stood out: The engine room personnel, diving into the freezing water. Bucket brigade- worked for long hours. John Moran...….. My mother heard a news brief (WTIC TV Connecticut)- Jarvis had run aground with no other details ‘fate of the crew unknown.’ For three days she thought I was dead. John Moran. Thanks JD Steven Craig, author.

Sad to hear of my shipmate John’s passing. We both enlisted and took our oaths together into the Coast Guard on the same day at the recruiter in Hartford. John went on to serve aboard the brand new Cutter Jarvis WHEC 725 in Hawaii (Lucky him) and I aboard the Cutter Chase 718 in Boston, sisterships. We remained steadfast friends and shipmates able to talk the talk because we walked the walk. I will miss his sea stories and never ending humor. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and shipmates. Fair winds, following seas Matey.
