Obituary for Florence " Flo" & Leon Langlois
Florence “Flo” Ann (Zawrotny) Langlois, 74, and Leon Dennis Langlois, 75 years young, of East Longmeadow, passed away at Baystate Medical Center from COVID-19. Florence passed away on November 26, 2020, surrounded by her children. Before she passed away, she commented “I am going to die today and Dad is going to follow me to Heaven”, and that he did. Leon passed away just eleven days later, on December 7th, 2020, also surrounded by his children. The pair met on December 27, 1964 for a blind date at Red Rose Pizza in Springfield. Leon was home from the the U.S. Navy and Florence worked for Mercy Hospital. The two were married just a few short months later, on April 24, 1965, in Ludlow, Massachusetts and were still in love almost 56 years later!
At the time of Florence’s death, Florence and Leon had been married for the better part of 56 years. The pair began their lives together in Springfield, MA, and moved to Southwick a few years later with their three children Todd, Joseph, and Tracy. In 1980, Florence, Leon and the children, moved to Springfield, MA, until the children were grown. In 2007, Florence and Leon moved from Springfield to Naples, Florida for several years. While in Florida, the pair enjoyed doing volunteer work with the Harley Owners’ (HOG) Group and Florence volunteered for the church. Florence and Leon’s love for their children and grandchildren, however, brought them back to Western Massachusetts.
Leon was born August 12, 1945, in Springfield, MA, to his mother Flora “Flo” (Mailloux) Langlois. At his time of birth, Leon was predeceased by his father Leon Langlois, and had two grown brothers, Raymond “Buddy” Langlois, and Donald “Doc” Langlois. Flora Langlois later met and married Alphonse Noiseux, a widower, who had 5 grown daughters. The pair began a blended family together and Alphonse raised Leon as his own. Leon attended Holyoke schools and graduated from Holyoke High School with the class of 1963. Leon was predeceased by his mother, father, and his stepfather, his two brothers, “Buddy” Langlois and his wife Florence Langlois, and Donald Langlois, his sisters, Sr. Jeanette Noiseux of Marlboro, MA, Irene and husband Clement Joyal of Chicopee, MA, Rita and husband Walter Koch of Holyoke, MA, Lillian and Alfred Boiselle of Holyoke, MA, brother-in-law William Morton, of Holyoke, MA.
Upon completion of his duty in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS-Essex, Leon returned home and began working for Pratt & Whitney. Leon was a hard worker and dedicated father, often holding more than one job in order to provide for his family. Leon had been laid off from Pratt & Whitney and later began working for Ingersoll-Rand Terry Steam Turbine as a CNC Lathe machinist, where he worked until the company closed 10 years later. Leon completed his career as a machinist working for Johnson-Foils, a Springfield, MA. company, where he was also a CNC Lathe operator for many years. While he worked for Johnson Foils, Leon earned an Associate’s Degree in Accounting at Springfield Technical Community College, graduating, with honors, in 2002. Leon was an avid reader, a lover of history, trivia, golf, and a self-proclaimed word nerd!
Florence was born on November 30, 1945, in Springfield, MA, to Florian “Rocky” Zawrotny and Edith (Gokey) Zawrotny. Florence was predeceased by her mother, father and her sister Carolyn (Zawrotny) Lewis, all of Springfield, MA. Florence attended Springfield schools and graduated from Pathways Commerce High School with the class of 1963. Florence began working at Mercy Hospital as a clerical worker. In order to be home with her children during the day, Florence worked as a nurse’s aide during the overnight shift. After moving to Springfield, Florence worked as Director of Medical Records for Mediplex of East Longmeadow for nine years. Once retired from Mediplex, Florence enjoyed volunteer work, including the USO at Westover Airforce Base, Polish-American Women’s club. Florence could be described as a dedicated, kind-hearted, generous, loving mother and Memere who would do anything for her children and grandchildren! She was always her children and grandchildren’s biggest cheerleader! Florence was “The Life of the Party” and loved to be the center of attention and to make people laugh. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and spending time with friends and family in her spare time- oh, and ‘sometimes’ she liked chatting on the phone!
Together, Florence and Leon leave behind their three children Todd and wife Lisa Langlois of Somers, CT, Joseph and wife Stacy Langlois of West Springfield, MA, and Tracy (Langlois) Capozzi and her husband, Dr. Kenneth Capozzi of Woodbury, CT, as well as their grandchildren Bethany, Matthew, Joseph Jr., and Emma Langlois, and fur grandchildren Macie, Morgan, Pebbles and Pumpkin, Florence’s sisters Rosalie Gail Messier and her husband Phil of Springfield, MA, her sister Debbie and her husband Peter of Naples, FLA, their brother-in-law Richard Lewis of Springfield, MA, Leon’s sister Loretta Morton, of Holyoke, MA, their sister-in-law, Lillian Langlois, of Easthampton, MA, several nieces and nephews, and many life-long and very close friends.
Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the Bassinger & Dowd Funeral Home, 37 Gardner Street, East Windsor, CT 06088. A Funeral Home Service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021. Please abide by CDC recommendations, Masks and social distancing will be mandatory. Due to covid-19 restrictions, burial with full Military Honors will be held privately at Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA.
