Obituary for Gertrude Law (Gradie)

Gertrude (Gradie) Law, 85 followed her angels’ home on January 7, 2021 after a long battle with dementia. Mom was the only child of the late Otto Leroy and Uldene (Corliss) Gradie of Putnum. Mom was born May 11, 1935 in Island Falls, ME. They moved to Putnam, CT when mom was 8 years old. She excelled in school and graduated from Putnam High School in 1953. She received her nursing degree at Providence School of Nursing in 1956. While working towards her degree she met her husband Ernest W. Law who was as an orderly at the time. They married on May 26, 1956. Mom worked as a nurse for 28 years. She worked her way up to Supervisor for the med pool of Hartford, She decided to retire her nursing uniform to become an enrolled agent for the IRS. She purchased and ran 4 H&R Block offices for 35 years located in Mansfield, Stafford Springs, Vernon and Rockville. Although most people dread tax season, our mom thrived on it!! Every year she would know it was time for tax season. She was also an avid organist and played the organ in both First Church of Christ of Storrs and The First Baptist Church of Willimantic. Rarely would she miss a Sunday morning service!! Gertrude was predeceased by her two sons; Timothy Paul Law (8 months) and William Ernest Law (57 years); her parents Otto and Uldene Gradie; and her five Aunts and Uncles. She is survived by her children; Cheryl Ann Law of Vernon and Robert Wendell Law of Hampton; her grandchildren; Amanda Law, Tamara Law, Melanie Deschamps, Trevor Law, Brian Law and Erika and Evan Stanley; great grandchildren, Aiden Deschamps, Jayden Bechtel, Logan Deschamps and Hayley Law.
