Obituary for Mary Nilsson (Geissler)

Mary (Geissler) Nilsson, 89, of Broad Brook, beloved wife of the late James Nilsson Sr. passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021 at home surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Springfield, MA on August 12, 1931 to Adolph and Mabel (McSweeney) Geissler and lived her entire life in Broad Brook.

One of her many memories was riding with her father to pick up grocery orders (before widespread telephones) and then delivering the next day. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in South Windsor and Colby Junior College in NH.

Mary was a very strong woman, quiet and very generous. She loved reading, keeping up with politics, Florida, a well made Manhattan and the outdoors. She was the owner and Matriarch of Geissler’s Supermarket, and very proud to say the business is now in the hands of the fourth generation. Mary was happily married to James H. Nilsson until his untimely death at age 63 in 1995. She will be missed by her four children, James Nilsson Jr. and his wife Joan of South Windsor, Kathleen Rybick, Daniel Nilsson and his wife Mary Beth all of Broad Brook, and Karen Cudnik and her husband Jim of Somers.

Eight grandchildren blessed her life and led to many fun adventures, especially weekends in Vermont (no parents allowed!) and Sunday night ice cream runs to Dari Delite. They include Jennifer Blanchard and her husband Nicholas, Jaclyn Croteau and her husband Brian, Robert Rybick and his wife Nikole Richmond, Andrew Rybick and Brieana Pare, Ryan Nilsson and his wife Jamie Daniel, Eric Nilsson and his wife Erika, Jason Cudnik and his wife Vanessa LaPierre Cudnik, and Andrea McRitchie and her husband Brian.

Great grandchildren brought even special joy to Mary, including Jacob, Emma, Gianna, Mia, Blake, Owen, Hadley, Avery, Alivia and Amelia.

Besides her loving husband, James, she was predeceased by her son-in-law, Dennis Rybick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held privately for family and friends. Mary’s family would like to thank Melie from All Ways There Home-Care and Hartford Healthcare Hospice for their help and compassion during her final weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mary’s favorite charity, St. Labre Indian School (Stlabre.org), under ways to give and in memory of) or a charity of ones choice.
