Harriet Z. Barnas, 102, of Rocky Hill, formerly of Bloomfield and South Lyme, passed away peacefully in the evening of Tuesday, January 19, 2021. She was born March 9, 1918 in Hartford to the late Stella and John Zapert. One of 9 children, she attended Hartford Schools including SS Cyril, Methodious and Hartford High. Harriet had a high acumen for math which allowed her to excel at her jobs. She married James T. Barnas and they worked very hard throughout their marriage to provide for their 6 children. They also built, along with some friends help, the family cottage where all family and friends were welcome. The cottage was open to all and a haven to her children and grandchildren. She retired from the State of CT eventually wintering in Naples Florida and summering in Point O’ Woods, South Lyme. Harriet had a passion for tag sales, swimming at Point O’ Woods. She was a lifetime member of the Polish National Home in Hartford, serving as a member of the board. She is survived by her son; Thomas Barnas and his wife Donna of Vernon, her daughter; Alaine Harris of South Lyme; her 16 Grandchildren; 19 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Besides her husband James Barnas, Harriet was predeceased by four of her children; daughter, Barbara Simon, sons, James T. Barnas Jr., John Stephen Barnas and Paul Gregory Barnas. The family would like to thank the Atrium in Rocky Hill for their compassionate care where Harriet resided the last 5 years. Relatives and friends may join the family at 11:30 am on Friday, January 29, 2021 at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield for a graveside service. (Please gather directly at cemetery office) A memorial service will be held this summer of 2021. Please abide by CDC guidelines, masks and social distancing will be required.
