Obituary for Laura K. Hamel

Laura (Babcock) Hamel
October 20, 1952 – July 12, 2021

Laura Hamel of Ashford died peacefully at home from complications from chronic adrenal failure and cancer.

Raised in Newington, she studied at the Hartford Ballet, and formed a dance troupe (The Mountain Laurel Cloggers). She lived in Vernon in the 1980s, then 28 years in Ashford where she raised geese and later sheep on a small farm.

She was an artist who had a creative talent for making things more beautiful in painting, landscaping, fashion design and decorating. She loved nature, animals and most of all God. Although quiet, she was mentally gifted, a good story teller and eager to help, especially in advising on natural remedies.

She was active in several churches in the Ashford area, as well as Coventry and Manchester.

She was a good, wise and thrifty wife for 38 years to Maurice Hamel, who worked at the CT Department of Environmental Protection. Always pretty, her beauty grew more radiant as she aged.

She was the daughter of the late Stuart Babcock and Charlotte Reinaman Babcock of Bloomfield. She leaves sisters Constance Schenenga of Bloomfield, and Susan Babcock White of Bloomfield, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Wakes will be held on Saturday July 17th from 11 AM to 2 PM and Monday July 19th from 4 to 6 PM at Tolland Memorial Funeral Home at 375 Merrow Road in Tolland.

A funeral open to the public will be held on Tuesday July 20th at 11 AM at Westford Hill Cemetery at 333 Westford Hill Road in Ashford, followed by a reception at Living Proof Church at 38 Pompey Hollow Road (Rt. 44) in Ashford.
