Obituary for Sonja Eleanor Benson

Sonja Eleanor Benson, 88, of Coventry, beloved wife of the late Roy William Benson, passed away Friday November 19, 2021, surrounded by family. She was born August 29,1933 in Brooklyn, NY but she grew up in Bergen, Norway until the end of world war II, when she moved back to Brooklyn, NY, finished high school, got married, and got a job at a bank. She met Roy and they got married right after high school and before Roy went to the Korean war. She was the daughter of the late Johan and Alice Kristiansen. Sonja was a member of the Sons of Norway dance club and The Lodge Brooklyn Drill Team 243 in Brooklyn, NY. Sonja moved to Coventry in 1965 and became a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, then from some of the members of the church, she became part of the Vasa club of Manchester, CT. Sonja worked at the Frist Federal Bank in Brooklyn, NY, then when she moved to Connecticut, she worked at the Manchester Savings Bank in Bolton, CT. Sonja is survived by her daughter Deborah Torstenson of Coventry, CT and her husband David Torstenson, and her other daughter Lisa Rohner of Bristol, CT and her husband Paul Rohner. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, John David Torstenson and his wife Shyann Torstenson of Columbia, CT, Kari Leigh Torstenson of Coventry, CT and Danielle Rohner of Bristol, CT and her fiancé Ethan Cote. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Structural Fund and That Newfoundland Place Dog Rescue.
