Obituary for Gloria E. Matthews

Gloria E. Matthews, 91, of Tolland, CT passed away on July 6, 2022. She was born on April 6, 1931, in East Lempster, NH to the late George and Christina (McComb) Richardson. For 68 years, she was the beloved wife of Malcolm E. Matthews. She is survived by her daughter Alison Harris and her partner Phillip Dunham of Tolland, her granddaughter Kristina Harris and her partner Alex Shambach of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, and two great-grandchildren, Gwendalyn and Addison. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy, and Alexander Usko of Westbrook, CT. Gloria attended Keene State Teachers College and the University of Hartford. She settled in Tolland and taught for the Tolland Public Schools as a classroom and reading teacher and retired as Reading Coordinator for the town. Gloria was a member of two educational sororities, Alpha Delta Kappa (Gamma Chapter) and Delta Kappa Gamma (Rho Chapter). Gloria volunteered for the Tolland Historical Society and Literacy Volunteers of Connecticut. Apart from her family, Gloria’s true devotion was to God. Gloria was one of the founding members who built the Rockville-Tolland Seventh Day Adventist Church in Tolland. Gloria sought to serve God in many facets and consistently looked for ways to help her community close to home and abroad. At the church, Gloria served in many roles through the years, including Head Deaconess, Treasurer, and Clerk. Gloria was inspirational in her love, quiet strength, and dedication to her family. She will be greatly missed. Per Gloria’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends may join the family on Sunday, July 10, 2022, for a Graveside Service at 10 am at South Cemetery in Tolland. Gloria requests no flowers for the service.
