Obituary for Stephanie Julia Wrona

Stephanie Julia (Stefani Yalija) Wrona, 102, of West Hartford, formerly of Rockville passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022. She was born April 17, 1920 in Rockville, the daughter of the late Joseph and Stephanie (Igielska) Wrona. Our Aunt Steph was born during the Spanish Flu Pandemic and lived to witness the Covid-19 Pandemic. She was a Rosie the Riveter at Pratt & Whitney during WWII, enjoyed an almost 40 year career at The Travelers Insurance Co, was one of the first female car pool drivers from Rockville to Hartford. Devoted to St. Joseph Church, she sang in the choir, was a Reader at Mass, worked at the bazaars making hundreds of pierogis and gołąbki, served at rectory functions and helped with bookkeeping. In her 80s while driving home from an errand, she got into a close call on the road, pulled into the garage, patted the trunk of her car and said, “No more, goodbye”. Her decision, she never drove again. She lived in the same house in Rockville where she was born, until she was 93 years old. She then made the decision that she couldn’t live there by herself anymore and made the move to St. Mary Home (Frances Warde Towers – Independent living) where she was embraced by the Sisters of Mercy community and rumor even has it, was often affectionally called Mother Superior! She loved the Chapel and spent the next almost 9 years surrounded in love, warmth & friendship. Aunt Steph was fearless, independent, and an inspiration to all of us! Her family wishes to especially thank Sisters Marie, Peggy and Bruna and Fr. Leo, for always checking on her, the aides at St. Mary Home (FWT), Dante who never forgot to get her favorite soup, and Michael in the kitchen who always got her favorite meals. The family would also like to thank Polish Helping Hands (Beata & Edita), BESA Companions and Homemakers (Beth & Sandy) who provided some of the best state aides (Deseree, Delores, Sandra, Sonia, Iris, Kerene, Gina and more) your care & compassion were immeasurable. And last but not least, a big thank you to the doctors that got her to 102+, Doctors Harding, Downes, Stoj, Wycherly, Liftig and Zimmerman, and Sarah and Erin at the Hear Again Center. She is survived by her nieces, Teresa Brown (Robert) of Coventry, Sandra Casner of Castle Rock, CO and her nephews John Wrona (Cathy) of Parrish, FL and Michael Wrona (Barbara) of Narragansett, RI, and numerous great nieces and nephews as well as great, great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister and best friend Anna, and her brothers Frank, William, Marion and Stanley, a complete generation of the Wrona family now gone. Aunt Steph’s very last request was “Please pray for me”. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Monday, August 1, 2022 at St. Joseph Church, 33 West St., Rockville, CT. (The family requests that masks respectfully be worn.) Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery in Rockville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Joseph Church or the Sisters of Mercy and/or The Benedictines of Jesus Crucified, both at 2021 Albany Ave. West Hartford, CT 06117.
