Obituary for Carl H. Carlson III

Carl H. Carlson III, 76, of Coventry, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2022, at the home he shared with his beloved wife, Robin C. Carlson.

Born in Hartford, son of the late Walter and Agnes Carlson, he lived in Coventry for over 40 years in a house he built on 20 acres of land he loved so much. He retired in 2008 from The Hartford Public Library. He spent all his free time with the family he loved so dearly.

He leaves behind his grieving wife of 42 years, Robin C. Carlson; two children, Timothy Carlson and wife Kelly of Allentown, PA, and Sarah Morgan and husband, Brenden, of Coventry, CT; his cherished granddaughters, Vivian and Vera Morgan; his siblings, Gail Wiese of Ohio, Jane Carlson of Texas, Jan Conway of Ellington, CT, Walter Carlson Jr. and his wife, Judy of Ellington, CT, and Lois Carlson of Colchester, CT, wife of his dear predeceased brother, William (Willie) Carlson. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

He cherished spending time with his granddaughters, who were the absolute light of his life. He treasured watching them play sports and made close friendships with many parents and players. When he wasn’t picking up “his girls” from school or going on special adventures in the woods, you could find him in his garden or hunting on his property, and in winter months ice fishing with his dear friends Ronnie and Teddy. He enjoyed spending time during the summer at his house in Sandwich, MA with neighborhood friends he considered family, and fishing for striped bass. He loved early morning and late-night fishing with his son at the Canal and “Carl’s Rocks”. In his later years, he developed a passion for playing cornhole, and especially appreciated his wins against son-in-law, Brenden. He enjoyed watching all the Boston sports teams, and specifically loved watching the UConn women’s basketball games. But most of all, Carl would want to be remembered for how he deeply and truly he loved his wife Robin, daughter Sarah and son Timothy, and how proud he was of seeing what his children had accomplished – far beyond his hopes and dreams. Brenden wasn’t like a son to Carl, he was his son and beamed at seeing what a strong, wonderful father and man he had become. Carl would go to the moon and back for his family and told all of us every day “I love you” every chance he got.
A special thanks to Jeff Wilson for everything he did on that tragic day.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 1171 Main Street, Coventry, at 11 a.m. on Thursday September 15th. A celebration of life will follow in Johnson Hall from 12-2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund.
