Obituary for Joseph James Hurley

Joseph James Hurley, 55, of Willington, Connecticut, passed away on Thursday, October 13, following a long illness. Joseph was a graduate of Marianapolis Preparatory School, the University of Hartford and the Quinnipiac University School of Law.

He is survived by his loving parents, James and Cecile Hurley of Willington, his dear sister, Regina Hurley of Flower Mound, Texas, his aunts (and uncles) Maripaz (and Montgomery) Shaw, Rev. J. Antonio Nespral, Miriam (and David) Kmetzo , Marie Therese Nespral, and numerous cousins.

Following work as an auditor for the Department of Defense and as a White House aide, he served as a law clerk for the Tax Court of New Jersey, the Connecticut Appellate Court and the United States Bankruptcy Court. He was also a Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney for the State of Connecticut. For the past nine years, he was employed by the State Department of Correction.

He was an aficionado of all things Disney, a fan of UConn women’s basketball and the Connecticut Sun, the Red Sox and the Washington Commanders. As an avid bridge player, he was close to becoming a grand master. He was a parishioner and member of the Choir of Blessed Sacrament Parish.

Calling hours will be at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Rd. (RT. 195) in Tolland on Wednesday, October 19 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Matthew Church in Tolland at 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 20. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Rockville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Blessed Sacrament Parish for the music ministry. Checks can be sent to Blessed Sacrament Parish, 111 Tolland Green Ext, Tolland CT 06084, with “Music Ministry” in the memo field.
