Obituary for Edsel Balfour Wellington McCarthy (Mr. Rockville)

Edsel Balfour Wellington McCarthy 67, of Rockville, Ct. passed away unexpectedly, on the morning of October 30th, 2022. His smile, laughter and love for his family and friends will be dearly missed. He was always an upbeat, optimistic, and genuinely happy guy, despite the setbacks and challenges life handed him. Edsel was born on November 10, 1955, in the Town of Vernon City of Rockville CT, to Edna Wright McCarthy and Noel Bancroft Wellington McCarthy. Edsel attended Rockville High School and Manchester Community College where he earned his Associate degree in Drug and Alcohol counseling. Edsel, whose family and parents often referred to him as, "Terry" and "Poopie" lived in Rockville Connecticut all of his life, a town he dearly loved. He worked at Lebanon Pines Addiction Treatment Center, in Lebanon Ct, as a drug and alcohol counselor for the entirety of his career, where he became respected, influential and reliable in this important role. Edsel was loved by his numerous clients and colleagues throughout his career, helping so many to lead better lives. Edsel was the foster father of Daniel Ethan Calixtro of Tucson Arizona, from the age of 11. Daniel was the light of Edsel's life. Danny will truly miss him. After some struggles in his early life with addiction, he overcame them. He recently was honored for his 31 years of sobriety, and was an active mentor and member of AA. He was so proud of that milestone, as was his partner Judy Gwozdz of 14 years. Edsel enjoyed his life to the fullest and used his time productively to focus on his many hobbies, projects and get togethers with friends and family. He made the effort to keep in touch with his many friends and acquaintances. He enjoyed camping, music, favorite tv shows and movies, but most of all, people. Edsel loved dogs, and always had one, including his most recent little pal, Mariah. Edsel was preceded in death by both of his parents and is survived by his Aunt Florence W. Rogers ("Aunt Dottie"); his foster son Daniel Ethan Calixtro, his partner Judy Gwozdz, many cousins and a host of family and friends who loved him dearly. A “Celebration of Life" will be held on Thursday November 10th (Edsel's birthday) from 4-6 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 6 p.m. at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home 76 Prospect Street Rockville, CT, 06066.
