Obituary for Salvatore Mancini

Salvatore “Sal” Mancini, 87, of Tolland, beloved husband of Kathy Mancini of 44 years, passed peacefully on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at home. Born in Pontelandolfo, Italy, son of the late Michele and Dontatella Mancini, Sal came to the United States in 1946. Upon graduating from Bulkeley High School of Hartford in 1955, Sal served four years in the United States Army. After serving in the Army, Sal was a machinist by trade until he owned the Royal Cafe in Hartford, working alongside his parents, sisters, sons and other family members. Continuing in his professional career, Sal was notably known for his building skillset. Outside of the institutions Sal worked for, he also built several homes with his sons on the weekends, famously reciting, “It’s good enough, nail it!”. Sal ended his impressive career, during his “retirement” at his sons restaurant, Red Rock Tavern in Hartford where he assisted in daily deliveries and greeting customers at lunch into his mid-eighties. In his spare time, Sal cherished tending to his beloved garden and passing on his teachings to his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Kathy, Sal is survived by his three sons, Michael Mancini and his wife Dana Mancini of Newington, Donald Mancini of Rocky Hill, and Alfred Mancini and his fiance Brianna Martineau of Tolland; his two sisters, Carmela Mancini and Victoria Mancini of West Hartford; his grandchildren, Tricia Bottaro, Charlene Callahan, Michael Mancini, Mary-Michaela Mancini, Chelsey Mancini, Sabrina Mancini and Nicole Mancini; his five great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Besides his parents, Sal was predeceased by his former wife, Gaetana Mancini.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, January 10, 5:00 – 8:00 at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road, Tolland. Funeral procession will be Wednesday, January 11, from the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 in St. Matthews Roman Catholic Church, 111 Tolland Green, Tolland. Burial with military honors will be at the Fairview Cemetery, 200 Whitman Ave, West Hartford.
