Obituary for Sandra Cullen (Crespo)

On Sunday Jan. 15th, Sandra Cullen, 80, of Willington CT, passed away peacefully with her family at her side. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, nurse, and dear friend to all who knew her. She is at peace now, and will be dearly missed.

She was born in Brooklyn NY, on Ground Hog Day, Feb. 2nd, 1942. Her family soon moved to a home they built in North Brookfield MA, where she was raised with her brother Paul, "Babe" and sister Ginger. She graduated from Nursing school, Class of 1962 and worked at various hospitals until moving to Tolland. Sandy then began working as a nurse and then ER supervisor, at what would become her work home and family, Johnson Memorial Hospital for the next 35 yrs. until her retirement in 2006.

She lived a full life and had many interests, which included being an Avon lady (Presidents club member) for many years visiting and selling skin so soft, jewelry and makeup to all! Bowling on Sunday night mixed leagues, and Wednesday Women's leagues at Vernon Lanes was a passion for her and her purple bowling ball. She was a member of the Moose Lodge Eastern Star, where she danced many a night away. She loved spending time with her grandson Nick, and watching him grow up to be a fine young man who she was very proud of. Many a family night was spent playing various card and board games. Especially scrabble where her word wizardry was legendary. Movie night was usually a movie Grandma chose as we enjoyed popcorn and laughs together.Early in life she enjoyed many travel adventures and later travelled through the many, many books she read and shared , with her dear friend Betty. Lunch with her friends at Olive Garden or 99 always brought joy to her ,shrimp scampi was her favorite! Elvis, Neil Diamond, baby Yoda, hummingbirds, Beanie babies, jewelry and hats all brought her much enjoyment.

She was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Hope Crespo along with brother Paul "Babe" Crespo all of North Brookfield; her daughter in law Michelle Anne Cullen, who she helped care for during her brief illness, Ron Moody of Traverse City MI, and ex husband William J. Cullen of Tolland. She is survived by, her son Paul Cullen and his 2nd wife Michele of Marlborough; her grandson Nicholas of Westminister CO; her sister Ginger Moody-Walters of Adamsville TN as well as many nieces, nephews and a large extended family including the Bovins, Cebulas, Hamiltons, Bouchards, and Roches.

The family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Health Care in Stafford Springs for all their compassionate care during her illness. Special thanks to Dr. Parikh, Brenda, Ashley, Sopie, Jamie, Fran, Angela, Marie and everyone who made Sandy feel so special and cared for.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday January 21st at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home , 375 Merrow Rd. Tolland, calling hours are between 10 am and 1 pm, followed by a luncheon to share fond memories. In typical Sandy fashion please wear something cheerful to honor her love of festive colors.
