Obituary for Rodney "Rod" Powell

Rodney “Rod” Powell, 51, of Tolland, Connecticut, husband of Tamara (Klassen) and father of Claire and Sam, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 15. He was born on May 7, 1971 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Dale and Bobbi Powell.

Rod spent his childhood in Flin Flon alongside his brother, Mark and sister, Tracey. Once married, Rod and Tamara settled in Perth Ontario and then moved to Morden where they had Claire and Sam. Rod’s job transfer moved them to Lake Jackson, Texas in 2012 and then to Tolland, Connecticut in 2017.

Rod spent most of his career in manufacturing, starting in maintenance, and quickly moving into supervisor and site manager roles. He excelled as a manager, always making his employees feel valued and heard. His sense of humor, chili cook offs, and constant presence in all areas of the facilities in which he worked will always be remembered.

Rod was an “outdoorsman” with his love of golf, hunting, hiking and fishing. Rod was an avid golfer, discovering the sport as a teen working at the Phantom Lake Golf Course in Flin Flon. He became a member of a golf club in every town in which he lived and participated in member tournaments too numerous to count. While living in Morden, Rod was introduced to hunting. Throughout his years, Rod has hunted deer, elk, and boar. Rod loved hiking with his family and friends and would bring his dogs, Maggie and Hawkeye along so they could run off leash. Fishing for pickerel and lake trout at Lake Athapap in Flin Flon was something he enjoyed every summer.

Rod will be remembered most for his love of summers at the cabin on the lake, where in addition to fishing, he loved to go boating and cliff jumping with his kids. Here, he built a treehouse for Claire and Sam to enjoy. Rod was incredibly proud of his children and everyone who knew him heard countless stories about Claire and Sam.

Road’s craftsmanship extended to designing and building live edge tables and desks and making and sharing his maple syrup, limoncello, and ‘apple pie’ moonshine with friends.

Rod’s proudest accomplishment was that of his children. Everyone who knew him heard countless stories about Claire and Sam, their talents, successes, and adventures

Rod is survived by his spouse Tamara, children Sam and Claire; parents Dale and Bobbi Powell; brother Mark and his wife Remona; sister Tracey and her husband Gari Gordon; nephews Johnathan (Lynn), Alex, Stephen, Tanner, and Levi; nieces Rachelle (Spence), Amie (Chris), Sarah (Jonathan), Christina, and Kara. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Brendan Klassen and his wife Jackie and their children Halia and Madden; father and mother-in-law, Don and Kathy Klassen; extended family and countless friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road, Tolland, CT on Saturday April 22, 2023, at 4:00 PM. Family and friends may attend a period of visitation from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM prior to the service.
