Obituary for Richard Smith

Richard Smith, 84, passed away peacefully on June 9th, 2023. He was born on May 17, 1939, in Hartford, Connecticut, was raised and attended schools in Windsor and lived in Hartford, South Windsor and Tolland CT. Richard, a veteran of the United States Army served as a Machine Operator for three years until Military Honorable Discharge. Rich worked as a Construction Driver for 40 plus years and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local #559 until he retired in 2002.

Rich was involved with the Reddington Rock Riding Club, Stafford, CT and enjoyed group trail rides throughout Connecticut and Vermont as well as local parades and events for the Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. in Hartford. He was always willing to lend a hand or a horse trailer to help fellow equestrians and even convinced his wife Pat to learn to ride so they could enjoy his hobby of horses and riding side by side.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Amy Mae (Holton) Smith, his former wife of 43 years Dolores “Dee” Ann Smith (mother of Jeffery Smith) and his brothers Robert and Larson Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Patricia (Gauvin) Smith, Sterling, CT, his son Jeffery and wife Lisa, Tolland, CT, his nephews Walter, William and Gregory Smith and a host of family, friends and his horse loving community. We will all miss his playful, good-natured jokes, stories and smile.

Friends and family may call at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Rd., Rte. 195, Tolland Friday, June 16th, 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to the
