Obituary for Violet F.A. McLaughlin

Violet F.A. McLaughlin, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 25, 2023 surrounded by her family.
Violet (Vi) was born on June 22, 1937, in Tipperary, Ireland, to the late Thomas H. and Ethel A. (Hewitt) Moore. Vi completed nursing school in England and immigrated to America in the early 1950s, with a plan to travel the country learning different nursing techniques. The plans changed when she met a handsome man named John on a blind date on the Air Force base where he was stationed in Concord, Mass. They fell in love and settled in Rockville, Conn. They married in 1961 and had one daughter, Tara, in 1969. Always a caretaker, Vi worked as a nurse at Rockville General Hospital and later as a CNA at Foxhill Nursing Home. A perennial teacher, Vi was active in the PTO, taught Sunday School at Trinity Lutheran Church, and tutored many neighborhood children after school. A fiercely devoted mother and friend, she encouraged self-reliance, perseverance, curiosity and compassion. She was warm, welcoming, incredibly supportive and quietly funny, if not a bit sarcastic. She loved the ocean, watching birds and squirrels in her backyard, picnics at Harkness State Park, autumn drives up the Mohawk Trail with Dad, and reading countless books. She lived simply and had a huge heart.

She is predeceased by her husband John, and her sister, Aida. She is survived by her daughter Tara and Tara’s fiancée Gregory. She also leaves behind a sister, Pamela, and a brother, Noel, as well as many loving nieces and nephews on both sides of the Atlantic. She was dearly loved by so many — words cannot describe how much she will be missed.

Relatives and friends may join the family on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home, 76 Prospect St., Rockville, from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

We would like to thank friends and family (particularly Katie Crommett) for their care and support. Very special thanks to the Hospice program at Eastern Connecticut Health Network, especially to Nancy and Cathleen for the excellent care they gave our Mom and the kindness they showed our family.

Memorial contributions can be made in Violet’s name to the Cornerstone Foundation, 15 Prospect St., Rockville, CT 06066; or to Hockanum Valley Community Council, 29 Naek Road, Suite 5A, Vernon CT 06066.
