Obituary for Edward L. "Ted" O'Brien Jr.

Edward “Ted” L. O’Brien, Jr. of Broad Brook, CT passed away on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at his home, surrounded by loved ones at the age of 80. He was born in Haydenville, MA in 1942, the son of the late Clara and Edward “Larry” O’Brien, Sr., and was a kind and loving husband to Kathryn B. O’Brien for 52 years. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1960, and from American International College in 1970 and became a Certified Public Accountant. He was an agent for the Internal Revenue Service for 39 years, serving as President of the Hartford area National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) for 23 years, and an adjunct professor of accounting at Asnuntuck Community and Technical College in Enfield, CT, for 21 years. Civil service was important to Ted and it showed with his 33 years of service with (and retirement from) the 104th Massachusetts Air National Guard Wing at Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield, MA. He also had a passion for restoring old cars and enjoyed showing the antiques at car shows in the area. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family on Cape Cod and taking walks on the beach. His humor was contagious, and was always the friendly beacon in every room he entered.

Passionate about the community, he was involved with local issues within the town of Broad Brook, volunteered to coach his children’s sports teams and supported many philanthropic efforts and organizations around the greater Hartford area, including the Hartford Marathon, of which he was a proud volunteer for over 20 years. His desire to help others was further exemplified as he donated to the Red Cross 110 times and gave 13.75 gallons of blood throughout his life. As a practicing Catholic, he was a parishioner of St. Catherine’s Church in Broad Brook, CT. He was also a member of the Elk’s Club of Northampton, MA, the East Windsor Sportsman Club, and the Corvette Club of Connecticut.

Those left to cherish his memory are, his wife, Kathryn, of Broad Brook, his son, Edward “Ted” and daughter-in-law, Dustii, of Lafayette, LA, his daughter, Kathleen “KC”, of Hermosa Beach, CA, his brother in-law and sister in-law, Mike and Robyn Laga of Northampton, MA, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom cared about him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Dorothy O’Donnell, Francis Fulwider, and Irene Fiege. He will have a mass and celebration of life on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. Catherine's Church, 6 Windsorville Rd., Broad Brook, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to the Warehouse Point Library, 107 Main Street, East Windsor, CT 06088 in Edward O’Brien, Jr.’s name.
