Obituary for Theresa Digiuio VMD

Theresa Maria (Magnano) Digiulio VMD, aged 80, of Coventry, beloved wife of Daniel A Digiulio for 54 years, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2023, surrounded by her family. Theresa was born in Hartford, daughter to Delia (Goulet) and Richard H Magnano, Sr.

Theresa grew up in Middletown, Middlefield and Hartford and attended Bulkeley High School in Hartford. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pathobiology from the University of Connecticut, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 1965. At a time when many veterinary schools would not even send applications to women, Theresa was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 1969, earning her license to practice in the same year. She was one of only a handful of women licensed to practice in the state at that time.

During a career that spanned 5 decades, Dr. Digiulio practiced in West Hartford, Middletown (Piper’s Veterinary Hospital), Colchester, Farmington, Manchester and Glastonbury. She also worked for the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Connecticut. The last twenty years of her career was spent as attending veterinarian and consultant at Hartford Hospital, University of Connecticut Medical School and Trinity College. While a faculty member at Hartford Hospital, she was instrumental in transforming a small basement pre-clinical testing facility into a world class, destination center for advanced training, education, and medical device research.

Theresa served on the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association’s Board of Directors for many years as Secretary. She was elected as Connecticut State Veterinarian of the year by her peers in 1995 and as Southern New England Veterinarian of the Year by her peers in AASLA.

Theresa served on the Storrs Regional Agricultural Education consulting committee, the Connecticut FFA Foundation board and was an honorary member of the Storrs Regional and Mattabasset (Middletown) FFA Chapters.

An active member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Coventry, Theresa was a long time lector, Eucharistic minister and member of the parish council. She was very active in the Norwich Diocese’s spiritual renewal program, Life in the Spirit, with Father Ray Introvigne.

An avid conservationist, Theresa and her family have been active in protecting open space, forest and farmland. With a generous donation, they have ensured that their farm property will be protected from development in perpetuity.

Theresa was preceded in death by her brother, Richard H Magnano, Junior, as well as her many pets, beloved Morgan Horses and Labrador Retrievers. Besides her devoted husband Daniel, she leaves a daughter, Kristin Marie Digiulio.

Theresa’s family would like to thank the staff and residents at Douglas Manor in Windham for their kindness and care of both Theresa and her family during the past 18 months.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UCONN Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science, the Connecticut FFA Foundation or Connecticut Farmland Trust.

Calling hours will be held on Friday November 17 from 4-7 pm at Coventry-Pietras Funeral Home, 2665 Boston Turnpike, Coventry. Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 18 at 11 am at St Mary’ Church, 1600 Main Street, Coventry.
