Obituary for Bernard B. Bible

Bernard Bond Bible, 81, of Tolland passed away on Thursday, March 21. Bernard was born in Pisgah, West Virginia, on April 22, 1942. Bernard’s life was filled with devotion to his family and intellectual curiosity. He was married for 58 years to his loving wife Doris Haejin (nee Kimm) and their partnership was a model of dedication and growth.

The oldest child of Bond and Dorothy Galloway Bible, Bernard grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia and State College, Pennsylvania. He received a Bachelor’s from Ohio State University and a Master’s and Doctorate from Michigan State University. After eight years as Professor of Horticulture at McGill University, he joined the University of Connecticut Plant Science Department in 1977 and served as a tenured professor for 27 years. He enjoyed a productive retirement, serving on the board of the Hicks-Stearns Family Museum and as a volunteer educator for St. Matthew Church in Tolland.

Bernard was a man of ideas. Allowing his intellectual curiosity to guide his thoughtful beliefs on morality, economics, politics, and Christianity, he embraced Catholicism in his early seventies. He was equally fascinated by the natural world, carefully tending his many horticultural research projects, home gardens, and terrariums. He was especially passionate about his competitive tomato greenhouse growing course in which he taught generations of UConn Plant Physiology students.

In addition to Doris Haejin, he is survived by his two sons and grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family on Wed. March 27, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Rd. (Rt 195) in Tolland.
