Obituary for Nancy L. Young (Matczak)

Nancy L. Young (Matczak)
Nancy L. Young, 61, of Upper Marlboro, MD and formerly of Tolland, beloved wife of Frederick W. Young, passed away at home on January 2, 2011 with her family by her side. She was born on January 20, 1949, daughter of the late Aloysius P. Matczak and Margaret J. (Manganello) Matczak of East Hartford, CT. She attended East Catholic High School and earned teaching degrees at Central and Eastern Connecticut State Universities. She was a first grade teacher in South Windsor for 26 years, initially at Wapping Elementary School and then, after a break to raise her two daughters, at Pleasant Valley. She helped hundreds of children learn to read. She was an avid golfer, a member at Ellington Ridge along with her husband, and she enjoyed taking golf vacations to Florida. She loved the Red Sox and attended dozens of games at Fenway with her family. She was excited to participate in the two World Series victory parades in 2004 and 2007 in Boston. She was a member of St. Matthew parish in Tolland, where she was very active in the church community, serving as a Eucharistic minister, marriage preparation counselor, and a member of the Couples' Club. She supported a variety of charitable causes, including Heifer International, Haitian relief organizations, and cancer research. In 2009 and 2010, her daughter Amy raised over $10,000 for Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, running the Boston Marathon on her behalf. She also enjoyed biking, shopping with her daughters, and spending time with friends. In retirement, she volunteered at Rockville Hospital as a patient escort. After living more than 60 years in Connecticut, she and her husband relocated to Maryland to be closer to their grandson, who loved his Nana very much. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Young is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Young of Washington, D.C. and Amy Young of Boston; and son-in-law Chris Miller and grandson Lucas Miller of Washington, D.C. She also leaves a sister, Joan Kenyon, and her husband Ted of Ellington, CT, as well as a host of other family and friends who will miss her greatly. Her family would like to thank everyone for all of the support and prayers they provided over the years. Relatives and friends are welcomed on Friday, January 7, 2011 from 4-7 pm at the Tolland Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Merrow Road (Rt 195), Tolland CT 06084. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at St. Matthew Church, 111 Tolland Green, Tolland CT. Burial will follow at South Cemetery,Tolland.
