Obituary for Walter W. Elwell

Walter W. Elwell
Walter Worth Elwell passed July 23, 2015 peacefully at Windham Hospital from related complications after a short bout with pneumonia.
Born in Hempstead, Long Island on July 2nd 1925, he was 90 years old. Walter attended Hempstead High School where he was class President in his senior year and volunteered for the Army prior to graduation. He served in the Army from 1943-1945 when he was wounded in battle in Germany. Walter received a Purple Heart for his service to our country.
After coming home from the war, Walter finished his high school education and went on to graduate from Syracuse University. Walter taught middle school history for many years before taking a job with the State of Connecticut welfare department as a case worker. He retired from the State of Connecticut in 1990.
Walter shared his life and 59 years of marriage with MaryEllen Elwell who predeceased Walter 2 years earlier. They lived in the same house in Coventry, CT since 1957 where they raised their four sons. Walter loved music and enjoyed playing his trumpet in various community bands as well as singing in choir. He attended numerous concerts and particularly loved big band and swing band music. His hobbies included collecting memorabilia, mostly as printed materials like magazines, newspapers and historic books and he loved to go to yard sales. Walter was an almost lifetime member of the First Congregational Church of Coventry, CT. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his quick wit, his butchering of puns to get a punch line and his always affable personality. “Wally” as he was known to all, lived an exemplary life and was a great example for his sons to follow.
He leaves his sons William and wife Pam Standley of Spring, TX; Robert and wife Valorie of Barto, PA; Richard and wife Carol of Mansfield, CT and David of Coventry CT; his grandchildren Bryan and wife Danielle Elwell of Harleysville, PA; Alicia Simoneau DVM and her husband Eric of Easton, PA; Shane and his wife Yuliya Elwell of Denver, CO and Brock Squires and his son Dylan (great grandchild) of Lebanon Ct.
No funeral is scheduled as per his wishes to be cremated without ceremony. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to Coventry Senior Center. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Coventry- Pietras Funeral Homes . For online condolences please visit www.pietrasfuneralhome.com
