One Story

I have those sweet childhood memories of visiting my grandmother; you know the kind: holiday meals on the china she had purchased piece by piece as an older teen, her old clock on the wall with its charming cuckoo to announce the hour, and the distinct jingling of her bracelets as she animatedly recounted life stories. But it's the crackling embrace of wicker chairs and the sweet musty aroma of old books that evoke the fondest memories of reading from her collection - she would point out particular finds saying, "This was your father's." And I would read them with delight.

My grandmother's favorite story was "Ivanhoe". At one point in it the Black Knight said, "For he that does good, having the unlimited power to do evil, deserves praise not only for the good which he performs but for the evil which he forbears." We all have power to do evil. My grandmother chose to do good. She contributed to my love for reading. And she contributed more to family, friends and her community. She deserves praise for the good she chose and the legacy she left.
